Understanding Self Assessment
What Is Self Assessment?
Self assessment is the system HMRC uses to collect income tax from individuals who don't have all their tax deducted at source. Rather than your employer handling everything, you're responsible for reporting your income and calculating how much tax you owe.
Each tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April the following year. You must file your return and pay any tax owed by 31 January after the tax year ends. Getting it wrong — or filing late — can result in penalties, interest charges, and unnecessary stress.

Filing your self assessment tax return doesn't have to be stressful. At Barnett & Co, we take care of everything from gathering your income and expense data to submitting an accurate, compliant return to HMRC, all for a clear, fixed fee.

We don't just fill in the boxes. We actively look for allowances and reliefs you might be entitled to, from business expenses and mileage to pension contributions and capital gains allowances.
