Self Assessment Deadlines and When to Register

If you receive income that is not taxed through PAYE—such as self-employment earnings, rental income, or dividends—you may need to complete a Self Assessment tax return. Understanding when to register and what deadlines apply is crucial to staying compliant and avoiding penalties.

Who Needs to Register for Self Assessment?

You must register for Self Assessment with HMRC if you:

  • Are self-employed as a sole trader and earned more than £1,000 in a tax year

  • Are a partner in a business partnership

  • Receive rental income from property

  • Have untaxed income from dividends, savings, or investments

  • Need to report capital gains or claim tax reliefs

  • Earn over £100,000 annually

When to Register for Self Assessment

If this is your first time filing, you must register with HMRC by:

🗓️ 5 October following the end of the tax year.

For example:
To file for the 2024/25 tax year (which ended on 5 April 2025), you must register by 5 October 2025.

Registration provides you with your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), which is required to submit your return.

Key Deadlines for Self Assessment

Once registered, make note of the following key dates:

  • 5 October 2025 – Deadline to register for Self Assessment (for 2024/25 tax year)

  • 31 October 2025 – Deadline to submit a paper tax return

  • 31 January 2026 – Deadline to submit an online tax return

  • 31 January 2026 – Deadline to pay any tax owed

  • 31 July 2026 – Deadline for the second payment on account (if applicable)

Missing these deadlines may result in automatic penalties and interest.

Penalties for Late Filing or Payment

HMRC may charge the following:

  • £100 fixed penalty if your return is up to 3 months late

  • £10 daily penalty (up to 90 days) for continued non-filing

  • Additional penalties after 6 and 12 months

  • Interest on late payments

Delays can become costly—act early to avoid unnecessary charges.
