Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, the UK government is introducing mandatory identity verification for company officers and agents. This new requirement is designed to tackle fraud, improve corporate transparency, and ensure that only verified individuals can form or manage UK companies.
Who Needs to Verify Their Identity?
If you are involved with a UK company in any of the following roles, you must verify your identity:
Company Director
Person with Significant Control (PSC)
Company Secretary or Filing Agent
Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
Verification is a legal requirement, and failure to comply may result in penalties, disqualification, or rejection of company filings.
How Can You Verify?
There are three ways to verify your identity:
Online via GOV.UK One Login – Use a biometric passport or UK driving licence.
In person at a UK Post Office – For those who cannot verify online.
Through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) – Such as Barnett & Co Accountants.
What Is a Companies House Personal Code?
Once verified, you will receive a Companies House personal code — a unique ID linked to your name, not your company. You will need this code to:
File confirmation statements
Be appointed as a director or PSC
Act as a Companies House authorised agent
Your personal code must be kept secure and only shared with trusted agents, such as your accountant.
What Happens If You Do Not Verify?
From autumn 2025, you will not be able to:
Register a new company
File company updates or confirmation statements
Act as a director, PSC, or ACSP
Not complying with the identity verification requirement may result in:
Financial penalties
Disqualification as a director
Rejection of company filings
